The list of conditions and disabilities is always changing and evolving. It's important to focus on the daily challenges affecting you or your loved ones. To see if you're eligible, you can check a list of common disabilities and conditions.
Still Apply! Many of our clients were initially told they wouldn’t be eligible. At Canada Disability Specialists, we work closely with your doctor to help them understand why you’re applying for the disability tax credit.
No, unfortunately having disability in place does not automatically approve you for the disability tax credit
No one besides you, the CRA, and your physician or nurse practitioner will know about your disability tax credit. The DTC can also help you access other benefits, such as the Registered Disability Savings Plan and additional Child Tax Credit supplements, providing more support and resources.
Yes! As federal policies continue to change, we will likely see more federal resources attached to the Disability Tax Credit. This is true with RDSP and the one-time covid payments for those having DTC in place.
Yes, you can transfer the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) to your spouse or caregiver under certain conditions. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) allows the unused portion of the DTC to be transferred if the person with the disability does not have enough taxable income to use the entire credit themselves.
Don't be discouraged if you're denied on your first or even second attempt. Many people experience this. We have processed many applications and know what the CRA is looking for. We have a 99% success rate with our applications.
That depends on how much you owe to the CRA and how much your refund will be.
(i.e., if you owe the CRA $5,000, your DTC refund is $20,000. The CRA will provide you the difference of $15,000 from your refund, but your balance owed to the CRA will be at $0.)
